Earlier this week we met again with Meta and TikTok to advance our cooperation on the Ceuta situation.
Both platforms have ramped up enforcement against human smuggling and disinformation.

And these actions are supported by a reinforced regional and global fact-checking network.
Together, we continue to monitor developments closely to assess what further actions are needed.

Today, we convened a meeting of the DSA Board dedicated to the situation in Ceuta.
Spanish authorities had the opportunity to update all Member States on the situation overall.

It was also a chance for all Member States to exchange and take stock of the Commission’s ongoing engagement with platforms, actions taken, further possible actions, as well as latest developments.

The Commission will continue intensive coordination with the platforms to stop the spread of mid and disinformation and combat the false promises peddled by criminal networks.
Combatting illegal migration and protecting lives is a shared responsibility.

Constructive call today with Oscar Lopez @oscarlopeztwit, Minister for Digital Transformation and Civil Service of Spain, regarding the situation in Ceuta and how to prevent such dangerous and illegal journeys and the tragic loss of life.
The @EU_Commission, @Europol and platforms are exchanging daily and we have increased our coordination.
TikTok and Meta have activated crisis protocols and have now put in place an ad-hoc escalation and cooperation mechanism with fact-checkers.
We will continue to be vigilant in our work with our agencies and the platforms to stifle criminal networks selling false promises, at the cost of lives.

Platforms must act decisively in keeping the integrity of the digital space, in particular during crisis situations.

Sunday marks the beginning of enforcement for the AI Act. The new transparency rules will also start to apply.
We are taking an important step towards AI that people and businesses can understand and trust, and whose benefits are widely shared across our society.

Under the new rules, chatbots & other interactive AI systems will have to tell users they are dealing with AI.
Deepfakes will have to be labelled.
AI-generated or altered content will also have to carry machine-readable marks so it can be detected.

We are following closely the situation in Ceuta.
As President @vonderleyen said, dangerous crossings must stop immediately. Smuggling networks must be dismantled. And returns must be swift, in line with our rules.

Protecting the Union’s external borders is a crucial part of our efforts to tackle irregular migration and prevent dangerous journeys.
I am in close cooperation with @magnusbrunner @dubravkasuica, who are working closely with authorities & partners to help manage the situation.
